Supporting Your Recovery at Massage Yeah Benowa

A therapist performing gentle manual lymphatic drainage on the stomach of her client.

At Massage Yeah, we understand that the days and weeks following surgery are critical for your healing and comfort. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized, gentle technique designed to reduce swelling and accelerate your body’s natural recovery process.

Below are the most common questions our Benowa clients ask about our pre and post-surgery MLD packages.

1. What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) for surgery recovery?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a highly specialized, rhythmic massage technique. Unlike a traditional deep tissue massage, MLD uses very light pressure to stimulate the lymphatic system. This helps move excess fluid (oedema) away from the surgical site, reducing swelling, bruising, and discomfort while promoting faster tissue healing.

2. When should I start MLD after my surgery?

For most cosmetic and elective surgeries—such as liposuction, tummy tucks (abdominoplasty), or joint replacements—we generally recommend starting MLD 5-7 days post-operation, provided your surgeon has given clearance. Starting early helps prevent the fluid from “hardening” (fibrosis), making your recovery much smoother. Your therapist will always follow your surgeon’s post‑operative instructions to ensure safe, appropriate care.

3. Does post-surgery lymphatic drainage hurt?

Not at all. In fact, many of our clients find it incredibly soothing. Because the technique is skin-deep and rhythmic, it does not involve the heavy pressure that would irritate a surgical site. Our goal is to decrease your pain, not increase it.

4. How many sessions will I need for the best results?

Every body heals differently, but clinical results are most visible with a consistent protocol. We typically recommend:

Pre-Surgery: 1–2 sessions to prime the lymphatic system.

Post-Surgery: A series of 6, 7 or 8 sessions.
Most clients find that 2-3 sessions per week for the first fortnight provides the most significant reduction in post-op swelling.

5. Can MLD help with “lumps” or hardness after liposuction?

Yes. It is common to experience localized hardness (fibrosis) after liposuction. Specialized MLD helps to soften these areas by ensuring fluid doesn’t stagnate, resulting in a more contoured and “even” final surgical result.

6. Do I need a referral from my surgeon?

While a formal referral isn’t always mandatory, we highly recommend discussing MLD with your surgical team. We are happy to work alongside your surgeon’s specific post-op instructions to ensure your care is perfectly coordinated.
